Lucas Carpenter’s
‘Art Kids from the Country: Volume 1’
Delivers Universal Themes with
Unapologetic Authenticity
Lucas Carpenter’s EP, Art Kids from the Country: Volume 1 speaks universal themes of love, loss, identity, and moving on while growing up in rural America. Drawing from his personal experiences, Carpenter crafts relatable narratives that resonate with a broad audience.
Keep ‘em Guessin’
The EP with an unapologetic standout, “Keep ‘em Guessin’” that speaks to Carpenter’s dislike for label’s and divisiveness. Carpenter sets the tone with the lyrics, “Ever since my high school dances ive been raising high brows taking chances” immediately establishing a baseline for the kind of person Carpenter is. “Keem ‘em Guessing” calls for the recognition of our shared humanity and implores listeners to “be more than who we voted for”
Uppercase Love
“Uppercase Love” is a nostalgic intertwining of youthful love and faith, exploring the discovery of a love so profound that it deserved nothing short of a capitalization. Carpenter repeatably ties faith to the relationship with lyrics like, “spiritual spark” and describing a feeling “much bigger than me, created by God with a capital ‘G’”. He also makes references to praising the “worship band” in the second verse, further establishing the interconnectedness of their relationship and faith. The production of the song contains a vibrant and upbeat feel, perfectly complementing the melody and message.
Bootleg
“Bootleg” is a clever and relatable track that explores the themes of love, loss, and the struggle to move on. Carpenter uses the metaphor of a “bootleg” to describe his next relationship, signifying that his new love pales in comparison to his old flame. He begins by noting similarities in hair, style, and humor between his new girl and old love, as heard in the lyrics“She’s kinda got your humor, and the same shade of eyes” Carpenter makes his dissatisfaction apparent in the prechorus with the lyrics, “So I′ll lower my standards, It′s true Love, but blander.” “Bootleg” features a lively production and upbeat melody. Carpenter also adds a satisfying key change in the final chorus. One thing about Carpenter is that he knows how to “keep em guessing”.
Two Peas in a Pod
“Two Peas in a Pod” is a warming, upbeat song about the special connection found between two people who belong together. Carpenter opening the song with, “You come laughing through the front door, inside jokes and vintage clothes” allows for listeners to immediately understand the type of friendship being displayed and allows for a perfect visualization of the story that Carpenter is wanting us to digest. "Two Peas in a Pod" envelops listeners in a warm sense of nostalgia, creating a comforting feeling similar to the feeling of home, as if home were embodied in a person. Carpenter’s use of the common phrases “its like we were raised on the same vine” and “partners in crime” in the prechorus add to the song’s familiarity Sonically, the track is charmingly crafted with memorable melodies that coincide with the instrumental line that adds overall to the songs lively production.
Art Kids from the Country (Bleu Edition)
Closing the EP, “Art Kids from the Country” is an anthem for outcasts one and all. Sharing his personal experience of growing up as an artistic individual in a rural community. From a production standpoint, starting the song with an acoustic guitar and implementing the electric speaks to the blending of what the song is about with it’s mix of pop and folk elements. Carpenter truly captures the essences of growing up as an outlier in rural america with lyrics like, “When the two biggest deals are football and cornfields you get creative just to keep from going crazy” and “We weren't hipsters, hippies, or hicks we were art kids from the country.”
